Introduction to Blooming Bulbs
Browsing through this 2009 Season Catalogue will give you an indication of the bulb varieties available next season, from 1st February to 30th June 2010. Spring, glorious spring, brims with colours of exciting new life. The colours of spring bring smiles; from the tenacious purple crocus peeping up through a blanket of snow, to the fuzz of a new duckling feeling a spring breeze ruffling its tiny yellow feathers, to a garden blooming in a riot of rainbows, to the creamy-white softness of lambs leaping together along a verdant ridge, to pastures radiant with daffodil gold & peachy-pink blossom. Think the exhilarating colours of spring now.
In 2008, we had the joy of following the onset of our New Zealand spring as we travelled south, aged ute pulling equally aged caravan, from here in the north to the southern-most AA signpost at Bluff. We were in the Wairarapa in time for the Carterton Daffodil Festival. The countryside everywhere was a picture - stunning spring green, green grass that even we could consider worthy of eating, healthy stock, little lambs gambolling everywhere, fruit trees bursting out in pink & white, with daffs everywhere in gardens, paddocks & along fences. Further south the tulips were breathtaking; Wellington Botanical Gardens had masses of oval beds of tulips mixed in purples, reds & oranges. In Invercargill, Queens Gardens had more formal tulip beds with the strong red of the tall robust Île-de-France surrounded by brilliant clear blue forget-me-nots. There can be no argument - New Zealand is the most beautiful country in the world, enhanced by the brilliant splashes of colour that exotic spring bulbs add to every new vista with each turn in the road.
As well as sourcing some spring-flowering bulbs from overseas, Blooming Bulbs contracts from spring bulb growers all around New Zealand, so we were able to meet up with several of these folk. However the stock comes into our packing shed at various stages of the season from late February though March & occasionally even later. So while we process your orders through our system as we receive them from 1st February, some bulbs are not available till late in the season, which may delay despatch of an order. Do not hesitate to ring us if you are becoming anxious.
Bulbs can be somewhat capricious as a crop because they are affected by so many things: rain, sun, temperature, disease, viruses and indeed by demand.
We put our Catalogue together in December, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee that we will always have what we show in the right quantities. As the bulb season draws on, we do run out of stock of some varieties & we will substitute these with bulbs of equal or greater value.
Spring Bulbs can be planted in March, April & May and tulips as late as June.
You can always check on our website to see what varieties are in stock. We have many, many varieties and we just can’t fit them all into this catalogue, so you will find there is much more choice if you order from our website.
We store our bulbs in special crates that allow the air to flow around them. Additionally, we have two 20ft temperature-controlled containers here in our packing shed, so bulbs are held at carefully maintained temperatures for optimum development. These bulbs are ready for you to plant as soon as you receive them.
We also try to do our bit combating global warming by recycling boxes and tissue paper we gather from local businesses. Sorting is a bit of a nightmare but we feel it is worth it and hope you are not too disconcerted by some of the more novel packaging.
Happy gardening from Juliet, Lindsay, & the Blooming Team
